cookie monster, geek, tech, geeky

  • Booted up my old (5yr+) computer

  • Was amazed at how fast it ran

  • Got Gigabit Ethernet working on it FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER

  • Replaced the power supply from my spares

  • Found two 512MB ram chips for it in my spares

  • Diagnosed and tossed one bad ram chip

  • Found a great keyboard in my spares

  • Found a new mouse in my spares

  • Diagnosed a dying second (20GB) hard-drive in the old computer

  • Removed the second hard-drive

  • Freed up enough space on the remaining 10GB hard drive for a 3GB Linux install (Ubuntu)

  • Installed Ubuntu

Tomorrow I configure Samba and see about placing a 1TB HD into this beast to replace the job of the MyBookWorld, which has Gigabit Ethernet but might as well have had 10MB ethernet because it's so freaking slow (5MB/sec peak transfer rate).

CalculatedRisk: Housing leads the Economy

  • Nov. 24th, 2009 at 10:29 AM

CR sees a prolonged recession despite the increase in numbers of existing home sales.  Why?  Because they're turning into rental units!  He sees the key to prosperity as "household formation" meaning we basically need more Heads of Households...  And you can't head up a household without a job.

House creation (residential investment) is incredibly expensive, thus it is also incredibly stimulative to the economy.  It creates lots of jobs.  Without homebuilding driving the recovery, what gets us out of the slump?

After reading some of the commentary regarding the housing starts report this morning, it might be useful to reiterate these three points:

  •  Residential investment is the best leading indicator for the economy.
  •  Residential investment will not recover rapidly because of the large overhang of existing vacant housing units.
  •  Existing home sales are largely irrelevant for the economy.

Money Trickles North as Mexicans Help Relatives
Adriana Zehbrauskas for The New York Times

Sirenia Avendano wept as she spoke of sending money to her sons in the United States.

During the best of the times, Miguel Salcedo’s son, an illegal immigrant in San Diego, would be sending home hundreds of dollars a month to support his struggling family in Mexico. But at times like these, with the American economy out of whack and his son out of work, Mr. Salcedo finds himself doing what he never imagined he would have to do: wiring pesos north.

Catholic Church Rules Perjury Not A Mortal Sin

VATICAN CITY—The Vatican Synod of Bishops ruled Monday that perjury is not a mortal sin, downgrading the sin to venal."God and The Mother Church will be more than satisfied with a penance of 20 rosaries for any act of perjury," Cardinal Angelo Sodano said. "Any earthly prohibition against lying in a court of law has no relevance to the holy teachings of The Bible." The proclamation comes on the heels of last Friday's doctrinal clarification that adultery only occurs when both participants are adults.

Goldman Sachs Abandons kittens!

  • Nov. 11th, 2009 at 9:59 AM

File this under 'more proof that Goldman Sachs is evil'. :)

From New Deal 2.0:

Goldman Sachs abandons kittens (we’re not making this up)

Just when you think that Goldman can’t lose any more of its shine, The Villager newspaper of Lower Manhattan reports that the firm has neglected to pay the vet bills for homeless kittens found in its nearly-completed Battery Park City headquarters. An editorial offers an apology to America on behalf of the corporate behemoth:
“Since Goldman Sachs has been a big part of the Lower Manhattan fabric for almost a century and a half, we’d like to take this opportunity to apologize to the rest of the country on behalf of our neighbor, a financial giant personifying much of what is wrong on Wall St.
Before we get to the multibillion-dollar stuff, we’d first like to apologize that the firm has not yet paid a few thousand dollars of vet bills for the five kittens born in its headquarters building nearing completion in Battery Park City. In August, after our sister publication Downtown Express reported the kittens’ discovery, Goldman offered to pay the bills and encourage its employees to adopt the ‘BlackBerries.’
It may be just a matter of Goldman waiting to get the vet invoices — we can’t imagine they’d stiff kittens while writing out bonus checks worth $23 billion — but the cats still need adoptive homes. (Incidentally, anyone interested in one of these adorable kittens should e-mail their rescuer, the Brotmans, at rbrotpaw@aol.com.)”

Nice.

And many other laws of the internet.

One of the OWBN Council threads is now at > 380 emails in length, and I notice two things:
1. No relation of council members to Hitler, or to Nazis in general.
2. The thread is still on topic.

This has never happened before.
